Mountain Bike Frame Design

Project type

Engineering Design

Date

2020

Location

Los Angeles, CA

As an avid mountain biker and engineer, I've been very interested in design of mountain bike frames, especially regarding the kinematics of their rear suspension.

During some peak-Covid downtime, I designed my own high-pivot, Horst Link-based frame, starting with kinematic analysis to incorporate the leverage curve, anti-squat, and anti-rise behaviors that I felt reflected my preferred riding style. From there, I designed a frame around the 3D printed titanium lug and carbon tube design popularized by Atherton Bikes. There is some finishing work to be done in terms of tolerances and bearings that would need to happen if I wanted to actually have this made.
